One mother. Three children. One bag of rice and a reminder that compassion still reaches the hardest places.

The road to Nawanyaggo is a red dirt road.

In the dry season, it carries dust. In the rain, it softens beneath each step, making the journey slow and heavy. It is not a road many people travel by accident. It is the kind of road that asks something of those who walk it.

But these are the roads we have learned to follow.

Because at the end of roads like this are families whose needs may never reach the world’s attention, yet whose suffering is no less real. They are not statistics. They are mothers, fathers, grandparents, and children doing their best to survive with very little.

They are also seen by God. Scripture reminds us in Proverbs 31 to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves. For many families living in rural poverty, their needs may never make headlines. But they still matter. Their children still face hunger. Their prayers still rise. Their lives still carry dignity.

At the end of this road was the small mud-brick home of Namulondo Hajira, a 35-year-old widow raising three children on her own: Naome, age 3; Joseph, age 6; and Fauzia, age 12.

It was raining when our team arrived. They found Hajira standing in the doorway of the only shelter her family had. Behind her was a home with very little inside. No furniture. Barely enough food to carry her children through another day.

It is difficult to imagine going without food for days at a time. It is even harder to imagine looking at your children or grandchildren and not knowing what you can give them. For Hajira, that fear was not imaginary. Hunger was the question waiting in her home every morning:

What will my children eat today? No parent should have to carry that question.

A lack of food is never only about an empty stomach. For young children, poor nutrition can affect growth, strength, learning, and the body’s ability to fight illness. In Uganda, more than one third of young children, about 2.4 million are stunted, and half of children under five are anemic. According to UNICEF, children’s growth before age five is shaped more by nutrition, feeding practices, environment, and health care than by genetics or ethnicity.1

For mothers like Hajira, these are not distant statistics. They are the real concerns that come when food is uncertain.

Across sub-Saharan Africa, children remain especially vulnerable. In 2024, 4.9 million children died before reaching their fifth birthday worldwide. WHO reports that sub-Saharan Africa accounted for 2.8 million of those deaths, or 58% of all under-five deaths that year. ²

Those numbers are painful, but they help explain why food assistance matters so deeply when a child is hungry.

How much is left?
How long can it last?
Which child needs it most today?
How quietly can a mother go without it?

In many rural communities, this burden is carried out every day. Mothers stretch what little they have, giving what they can and often keeping less for themselves.

That day, help came down the red dirt road. Because someone like you made a $25 donation, we were able to bring Hajira’s family a bag of rice. A bag of rice may seem simple. It does not sound grand, makes much noise, or comes with a ceremony. But a hungry family understands the value of simple things.

Rice is also a familiar and practical food in Uganda. Common staple foods across the country include bananas, cassava, beans, sweet potatoes, rice, millet, and sorghum. In many homes, these foods are more than ingredients.

They are part of daily meals, family care, and survival. So, when our team brought Hajira’s family a bag of rice, it was not simply a donation.

It was food her family could use, relief she could feel, and one less evening spent wondering how she would feed her children. It meant three children could eat, rest, and wake up to a little less uncertainty.

Most of all, it meant someone had traveled that road and remembered her family was there.

Food assistance does more than quiet hunger for a day. It helps protect children’s health, supports growth and development, and eases the fear that settles over a home when there is not enough to eat. It gives families strength for today while longer-term care continues through education, safe drinking water, medicine, housing, and mission support.

Before we left, we also shared the Gospel with Hajira and prayed together. It was a quiet moment, but a meaningful one. The love of God was not only spoken that afternoon. It was carried through a bag of rice, through a prayer, through a moment of being seen, and through the simple act of showing up where help was needed.

During 2025, thanks to the compassion of our donors, we provided more than 1.7 million meals to children and families in urgent need.

These meals included locally purchased foods such as rice, beans, meat products, gari, cornmeal, and powdered milk. When possible, buying food locally allows us to respond to immediate needs with familiar foods while working within the communities we serve.

This local approach matters, especially in Uganda, where rural life, food, and agriculture are deeply connected. The World Bank has noted that Uganda’s agriculture sector plays a critical role in the economy, accounting for about 70% of employment and more than half of exports. ³

It also honors the people who help keep communities fed. In Uganda and many parts of the world, women play a vital role in growing food, preparing meals, caring for children, and helping families survive through seasons of hardship. Yet many women farmers still face barriers to land, financing, training, tools, and access to markets. The United Nations has declared 2026 the International Year of the Woman Farmer, recognizing that women farmers are central to food security, nutrition, and economic resilience. ⁴

For families like Hajira’s, this matters deeply. Food relief is not only about filling a bowl today. It is also about recognizing the mothers, caregivers, farmers, and communities who carry so much of the daily burden of survival, care, and hope.

We also supplement these local purchases with food shipped from the United States and, increasingly, with food grown or raised within our missions. Each source of food helps us meet the same purpose: reaching children and families who may otherwise go without.

This work reaches children living in our orphanages, students attending our mission schools, and families in rural villages where access to food, care, and support can be difficult.

Why One Meal Matters

A meal is never just a meal when a child is hungry.

Food helps children grow, learn, heal, and stay strong against illness. It helps parents and caregivers breathe a little easier. It gives families strength for today while longer-term support continues through education, clean water, housing, medicine, and spiritual care.

Psalm 146 tells us that the Lord gives food to the hungry and upholds the widow and the fatherless. In Hajira’s doorway, that truth felt close. Her family’s need was immediate, but so was the reminder that God had not forgotten them.

For families living in extreme poverty, one meal can be the difference between fear and relief. One bag of rice can mean a mother does not have to wonder who will eat. One visit can remind a family that they are not alone.

The number matters because it reflects what faithful giving can do. More than 1.7 million meals means children were fed, families were strengthened, and mothers like Hajira were given relief when the need was immediate.

But even a number that large cannot tell the whole story. Behind every meal is a child who needs strength to grow, a mother trying to face another day, and a family longing to know they have not been forgotten.

More Than Food Alone

Hajira’s story reminds us that need is not only measured in reports or statistics. It is measured in quiet doorways, empty bowls, and the daily uncertainty carried by families doing everything they can to survive.

As 1 John reminds us, love is not only spoken. It is shown through action and truth.

For Hajira, love looked like someone was coming through the rain.
For her children, love looked like food in the home.
For our team, love looked like prayer, presence, and the Gospel shared with compassion.
For donors, love looked like giving faithfully so help could reach a family they may never meet.

The Road Is Still There

The need in rural Africa is vast, and our missionaries are only scratching the surface. Still, we believe each road is worth traveling. Each family is worth reaching. Each meal is worth giving. Because sometimes, compassion and the love of Christ look like one bag of rice at the end of a red dirt road.

Thank you for your generous and continued support. Because of your compassion and commitment, we are able to provide food, medicine, housing, safe drinking water, education, and so much more to thousands of desperately poor children and their families across Africa, India, and Pakistan. Your kindness is not just appreciated—it is life-changing. It brings hope where there was once despair and creates opportunities where none existed before.

To all mothers, we wish you a heartfelt Happy Mother’s Day. Today, we celebrate you and thank you for the countless ways you care for your children and families. Mothers are truly heroes—often unsung, yet indispensable. As Rudyard Kipling so beautifully expressed, “God could not be everywhere, and therefore he made Mothers.” This sentiment rings especially true when we reflect on the extraordinary strength, resilience, and love that mothers demonstrate every single day.

In many parts of rural Africa, motherhood is defined not only by love but by sacrifice. When food is scarce, it is the children who eat first, while mothers quietly endure hunger. When medicine is limited, mothers often choose to go without so their children can receive care. These sacrifices are not occasional—they are a daily reality. Mothers consistently put the needs of their families above their own, asking for nothing in return.

It is also important to recognize that the role of “mother” extends far beyond biology. In many communities, grandmothers, aunts, older siblings, and even neighbors step into this role, providing care, stability, and love to vulnerable children. They embody what it truly means to be a mother—selfless, nurturing, and unwavering.

Pastor Dominic Ouma, who oversees the Divine Mercy Orphanage in Jinja, Uganda, recently shared the stories of three remarkable women—three “heroes”—whose lives are powerful examples of a mother’s love in action.

Anyango Florence is a single mother whose compassion knows no bounds. In addition to raising her own children, she has opened her home to 35 homeless children, offering them safety, stability, and a chance at life. With no steady source of income, Anyango works tirelessly each day—cultivating crops in her garden and taking on whatever odd jobs she can find—to provide food and basic necessities. Her efforts have saved lives and given hope to children who once had none. However, the physical and emotional toll has been immense. Today, she faces serious health challenges that require surgery. Despite this, she continues to put her children first, often neglecting her own urgent needs because so many depend on her for survival.

Brenda Lyaka is another inspiring example of resilience and love. Abandoned by her husband while pregnant, Brenda found herself alone and without support. Seeking refuge, she moved into the Divine Mercy Orphanage with her young son, Desmond. In 2014, her daughter-in-law suffered a debilitating stroke during pregnancy, leaving her unable to care for her children. In 2021, Biryeri lost her son in a tragic car accident—an event that also left her with broken legs and long-term physical challenges. Most recently, in 2026, her daughter-in-law passed away. Despite these unimaginable hardships, Biryeri continues to care for her grandchildren with unwavering determination.

Though mobility is difficult, her love and sense of responsibility never waver. She understands that she is the only thing standing between her grandchildren and a life of hunger and homelessness.

Through your support, the Divine Mercy Orphanage is able to provide critical assistance to women like Anyango, Brenda, and Biryeri, as well as countless other mothers and children in need. This support includes not only food and shelter, but also access to education, healthcare, and a stable environment where children can grow and thrive.

However, the need remains immense, and resources are limited. Pastor Dominic is deeply grateful for the generosity shown by ICF and its donors, but he continues to emphasize how much more could be done with additional support. Every contribution has the potential to expand these life-saving efforts—reaching more families, providing more meals, delivering more medical care, and creating more opportunities for education and long-term stability.

This Mother’s Day, we invite you to reflect on the incredible impact of a mother’s love—and to stand in solidarity with these extraordinary women. By supporting them, you are not only honoring their sacrifices but also helping to ensure that the children in their care have a chance at a better future.

Regular giving is one of the most powerful ways to make a lasting difference. It allows us to sustain and grow programs like the Divine Mercy Orphanage and to respond consistently to the needs of the communities we serve. We call our recurring donors Hope Ambassadors because they bring hope to those facing the most difficult circumstances—often situations of life and death.

We encourage you to consider becoming a Hope Ambassador. Your ongoing support can provide stability, continuity, and hope to those who need it most. For a limited time, Hope Ambassadors with a recurring donation of $25 or more will receive this limited-edition T-shirt! To learn more about this impactful program, please visit www.icfaid.org or call our office at 920-729-5721.

Every day, your generosity reaches places most of us will never see—and changes lives in ways that are hard to imagine.

Because of you, thousands of desperately poor children and families across Africa, India, and Pakistan receive food, medicine, clean water, education, and safe shelter. What may feel like a simple act of giving becomes something far greater: a lifeline.

Yet the need remains urgent.

The World Health Organization estimates that 2.9 million children under the age of five die each year in sub-Saharan Africa—that’s five children every minute. Even more heartbreaking, two-thirds of these deaths are caused by preventable illnesses like pneumonia, diarrhea, and malaria.

For more than 50 years, ICF has worked alongside local missionaries to confront this crisis head-on. Through your support, healthcare clinics are sustained, essential medicines are delivered, and life-saving resources—like mosquito nets, deworming treatments, and eyeglasses—reach children who would otherwise go without.

The Hidden Burden of Parasitic Infection

In many rural communities, children are exposed daily to contaminated soil, water, and food. Parasitic worms—hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms—silently invade their bodies.

The consequences are devastating: chronic pain, diarrhea, anemia, malnutrition, stunted growth, and impaired cognitive development.

But the solution can be astonishingly simple.

A single deworming tablet costs very little. Yet for a child who has never received one, it can mean the beginning of everything.

James lives in the village of Mawoito with his grandparents. Since birth, he has suffered from intestinal worms. The pain and fatigue have kept him from going to school. He cannot run or play like other children. Day by day, his childhood slips away.

In the village of Nankoma, Nakayizza stands holding a small tablet in her hand. Before taking it, she pauses—almost as if presenting something precious. Because to her, it is.That small packet represents more than medicine. It is the first sign that someone has come to her village and said:

Your health matters. Your life matters. You are not forgotten.

Across regions like Bugiri, Jinja, and Kamuli, countless children suffer from preventable and treatable conditions—simply because help has never arrived. But for many, that is beginning to change. Pastor Peterson has spent years leading outreach efforts across rural Uganda, bringing deworming treatments, mosquito nets, and chigger eradication medicine to isolated communities.

They go where others won’t go.
They serve those others won’t serve.
And they are saving lives—every single day.

Expanding Access to Life-Saving Care

Your support extends far beyond a single program.

In 2025, ICF provided approximately 4.4 million doses of medicines and medical supplies to treat illnesses ranging from malaria to AIDS.

Late at night in a small village in Togo, a young girl once lay awake wondering what her life would become.

Her parents were gone.
Her future was uncertain.

For millions of children across Africa, this story is painfully common.

The AIDS epidemic—combined with wars, disease, and severe poverty—has left a staggering number of children without parents. According to UNICEF, more than 52 million children in Africa are orphans. Some are taken in by relatives, but many are left without the basic necessities most of us take for granted: food, shelter, education, and safety.

This is where compassion makes the difference.

For more than 50 years, the International Children’s Fund (ICF) has worked with a singular mission: to help desperately poor children survive—and then thrive.

Through the support of generous donors, ICF provides food, medicine, housing, safe drinking water, education, and hope to thousands of children and their families in Africa, India, and Pakistan.

One of the most life-changing ways ICF fulfills this mission is through the construction and support of orphanages. Today, ICF supports 14 orphanages in Africa and India, giving vulnerable children a place where they can feel safe, cared for, and loved.

A Safe Haven Called Kingdom Care

At Kingdom Care Orphanage in Togo, Pastor Geoffrey greets children each morning not just as their caretaker—but as a father figure.

When many of these children first arrive, they carry invisible wounds: grief, fear, and uncertainty.

But over time, something remarkable begins to happen.

They start to laugh again.
They make friends.
They begin to dream about their futures.

Hundreds of children have found a home at Kingdom Care, and each one carries a story of resilience.

Kekeli’s Dream

Kekeli just turned nine years old.

Three years ago, she lost both of her parents and was brought to Kingdom Care Orphanage. For a child so young, the loss was overwhelming.

Kekeli also suffers from rheumatoid arthritis, a painful condition that sometimes makes even simple movement difficult.

She receives treatment at the orphanage clinic, but more advanced care is costly and difficult to access.

Still, Kekeli rarely talks about her pain.

Instead, she talks about her dream.

She wants to become a nurse.

“I want to help people who are sick like me,” she says quietly.

Mawusime’s Second Chance at Health

Eight-year-old Mawusime also arrived at Kingdom Care after losing her parents.

Since birth she has struggled with severe asthma. Before coming to the orphanage, breathing was often a frightening challenge.

But with regular care and treatment at the clinic, her health has improved dramatically.

Now she runs, plays, and laughs with the other children.

And like Kekeli, Mawusime dreams of one day becoming a nurse—so she can help other children who struggle to breathe.

A Neighbor’s Kindness Changed Everything

For Mawuwoe, hope came from an unexpected place.

After her parents passed away, she went to live with her aunt. But life was difficult. Her aunt could barely support the family and needed help working their small farm.

At just seven years old, Mawuwoe had to leave school.

Each day she worked long hours in the fields instead of sitting in a classroom.

Neighbors noticed her struggling and knew she deserved something better. They contacted Kingdom Care Orphanage, and last month Mawuwoe arrived at her new home.

Today she is back in school, learning, laughing, and rediscovering what it means to be a child.

When he first arrived at Kingdom Care, the orphanage was little more than a few small buildings. Pastor Geoffrey remembers those early days clearly.

He often becomes emotional when he talks about Jules and the hardships they both faced.

But today, Jules is thriving.

He is now the top student in the sixth grade.

His dream is to become a businessman one day—and to use his success to help support Kingdom Care so other children like him can find hope.

Turning Compassion Into Action

Stories like these are only possible because people choose to care.

Supporters who give regularly are known as Hope Ambassadors because their generosity allows ICF to continue providing life-saving care and opportunity to children facing the most difficult circumstances imaginable.

And donors can feel confident that their support is making a real difference.

During 2025, 99.8% of ICF’s total expenses went directly to program services, providing aid to children and families in need. Only 0.2% was used for management and administration, ensuring that nearly every dollar goes where it matters most.

The Power of Hope

Tonight, as many of us prepare for bed, children like Kekeli, Mawusime, Mawuwoe, and Jules will also lay their heads on their pillows.

But unlike before, they will fall asleep in a safe place.
They will have eaten a warm meal.
They will wake up tomorrow with the chance to go to school.

Most importantly, they will know that someone, somewhere, cared enough to help.

And that compassion is changing their lives—one child at a time.

Through the prayers, generosity, and commitment of our supporters, the International Children’s Fund (ICF) continued its mission to bring hope and tangible help to some of the world’s most vulnerable children and families. Working through a trusted network of indigenous pastors embedded in rural villages across Africa, India, and Pakistan, we were able to meet urgent needs while honoring local culture, dignity, and faith.

A Grassroots Approach That Makes a Real Difference

ICF operates differently by design. Our faith-based, grassroots approach ensures that help comes not from a distance, but from within the community itself. Local pastors—men and women who know the language, the needs, and the challenges firsthand—serve as the hands and feet of this mission.

Because of this model, in 2025, 99.8% of expenses went directly to program services, providing:

• Safe housing for children and families in crisis

• Nutritious food for those facing hunger

• Access to clean, life-sustaining water

• Education that opens doors to a better future

• Medical care for preventable and treatable conditions

• Opportunities that restore hope and self-sufficiency

Every dollar given is stewarded with care, prayer, and purpose.

Meals That Meet Urgent Needs

Nearly half of childhood deaths in Africa are due to starvation. This heartbreaking reality is why feeding programs remain a top priority for ICF.

During 2025, ICF delivered more than 1.7 million meals to vulnerable children and families facing hunger and food insecurity. But our work does not stop at emergency relief.

ICF also invested heavily in sustainable food programs, including agriculture initiatives, animal husbandry, and fish farms. These programs are designed not only to meet immediate needs, but to strengthen local missions and help communities become more self-sufficient for years to come.

Wells That Transform Villages for Years

In many developed countries, clean water is something most people rarely think about. It is readily available for drinking, cooking, and bathing. For many of the communities we serve, this is not the case.

Countless families are forced to rely on unsafe water sources, placing children at constant risk of disease.

In 2025, ICF drilled 26 new water wells, bringing clean, reliable water to villages where it had not previously existed. These wells do more than provide water—they transform health outcomes, restore dignity, and free children (especially girls) from hours spent fetching water each day.

Access to medicine in many parts of Africa is extremely limited, and the cost is far beyond what most families can afford.

During 2025, ICF provided approximately 4.4 million doses of medicine, treating illnesses ranging from malaria to AIDS. Through our ministry partners, we also delivered deworming treatments and jigger eradication services to thousands of vulnerable children—interventions that dramatically improve quality of life and prevent long-term health complications.

For many families, this care meant the difference between suffering and survival.

Education remains one of the most powerful tools for breaking generational cycles of poverty.

One of ICF’s most significant education initiatives is Victory University for Women in Liberia—a higher education program designed to expand opportunities for young women while strengthening families and communities for generations to come.

Scheduled to begin offering classes in fall 2026, the university will provide high-quality education in fields ranging from engineering to business, serving up to 3,000 students. This initiative represents long-term investment, not only in individual students, but in the future leadership and stability of the region.

Looking Ahead Together

While we celebrate what God has done through ICF in 2025, the needs remain great. Continued support allows us to sustain essential programs, respond to urgent crises, and expand life-changing opportunities for children and their families.

Your support right now is critical. Continued giving allows ICF to sustain essential programs, respond quickly to emerging crises, and expand life-changing opportunities through our faith-based, grassroots approach—where 99.8% of expenses go directly to program services.

We invite you to take the next step today:

Together, we can build on this year’s impact and ensure that hope continues to reach children and families who need it most.

As Christmas approaches, many of us begin preparing in familiar ways — decorating trees, baking cookies, gathering gifts for family, and planning festive meals. There is a sense of anticipation in the air, a joy that comes from celebrating God’s goodness and reflecting on the blessings He has poured into our lives. But in Liberia, Christmas looks very different.

And yet, in many ways, it is far more meaningful.Across the rural communities we serve, the season is marked not by material abundance, but by moments of gratitude, unity, and deep faith. It is a Christmas that reminds us of the very heart of the Gospel: hope arriving in humility.

Christmas in Liberia: Joy Without Excess

In the rural communities we serve, there are no Christmas trees glowing in living rooms, no long lines at shopping centers, and no piles of gifts waiting to be opened. Instead, Christmas in Liberia is beautifully simple. The children gather together. They share a meal—often one of the few special meals they’ll enjoy all year. And they give thanks to God for His provision. Even with so little, their gratitude fills the room. Their joy is pure, unclouded by material expectations. Their laughter and songs echo a deeper truth: Christmas is about hope.

Pastor Paasewe: A Servant Leader Bringing Christmas to Hundreds

At the heart of one of these joyful celebrations stands Pastor Boakai Blessing Paasewe, the founder and director of Living Word Mission in Cape Mount, Liberia.Pastor Paasewe’s life is an extraordinary example of humble sacrifice.

He does not live in comfort. His home is a small room behind the church, where he sleeps on the floor. His days are long and demanding as he provides care, structure, and stability for hundreds of children — many of whom rely completely on the mission for food, shelter, education, and emotional support.Yet every Christmas, Pastor Paasewe becomes a symbol of joy.

He dresses as Santa Claus — not with a store-bought costume or elaborate decorations, but with overflowing love and creativity. His “Santa suit” is pieced together by hand, and his laughter is genuine. When he enters the room, the children erupt with excitement. They dance. They cheer. They clap. For a moment, the weight of poverty lifts, and pure joy fills the space.

For children who have lost parents…
For children who rarely have a day of celebration…

For children who have faced hardships far beyond their years…This moment is a treasure. For many, this simple Christmas program is the highlight of the entire year — a reminder that they are seen, valued, and loved.

A School Transformed—And a Community With It

Earlier this year, ICF visited the Living Word Mission school—a facility founded 20 years ago and run by volunteer teachers. While the school was in great need of repairs, the Minister of Education proudly shared that it provides the best education in the area. Because of your generosity, we were able to:

Renovate the school building

Install new bathrooms

Drill a water well that now supplies water throughout the mission

During our visit, the students performed a Christmas-style program that brought tears to our eyes. These children, who once had no access to education, can now read, write, and dream—not just about tomorrow, but about a future filled with hope.

Event Hall Update: Almost Complete!

We are thrilled to share that the new Event Hall at My Brother’s Keeper Mission is nearly finished. This hall will serve as a community gathering place, a safe environment for meetings and outreach, and a space for future Christmas programs, school events, and discipleship gatherings. The progress has been remarkable, and the anticipation within the community is growing.

This hall will soon be a center of life, learning, and celebration.

Pharmaceutical Support Reaching Liberia, Uganda and Togo

This season, we are also celebrating major improvements in our pharmaceutical distribution. ICF has expanded its efforts to ensure that essential medicines reach clinics and communities in Liberia, Uganda and Togo. These supplies are life-changing—and often life-saving.

From antibiotics to basic wound care materials, these medicines directly impact the health of children and families who have limited or no access to medical treatment. This Christmas, health and healing are being delivered right where they are needed most.

A Christmas Rooted in Hope

As we reflect on the work happening at our missions, one thing becomes clear: Christmas is not defined by what we have. It’s defined by the hope we share. Pastor Paasewe, the children of Sanjanama and Cape Mount, our mission partners, and families across Africa remind us that the greatest gift we can give is love—expressed through compassion, generosity, and faith. Your support has made this Christmas brighter for countless children.

Your prayers, your gifts, and your kindness are helping transform communities that once had no access to education, clean water, medicine, or hope. From all of us at ICF: Thank you.

May your Christmas be blessed, and may the joy you’ve given be returned to you abundantly.

The first sound is rain.

It starts softly—like a whisper across the tin roofs—but soon becomes a roar, washing down the red clay paths that twist through Amakpape, a small village in Togo, West Africa. The storm doesn’t bring relief. It brings destruction. Mud walls dissolve and thatched roofs collapse. The single wooden structure that once served as a shelter for children gives way beneath the floodwater. When the rain stops, all that remains is ruin—and the unwavering faith of one man kneeling in the mud, whispering, “Lord, where You go, I will go.”

That man’s name is Geoffrey Azonwougan, and this is where hope begins.

A Childhood of Prayer and Hunger

Geoffrey’s story doesn’t start with success, it starts with hunger.

As a child, Geoffrey knew the pain of sleeping without food, of wandering the streets without a home. His earliest memories are not of toys or laughter but of gathering other orphans to sing and pray under the shade of a mango tree. “I was only thirteen,” he remembers, “but I felt God stirring something deep in my heart—to care for those who had no one.”

He fasted often, crying out to God for help, for direction, for purpose.

It was during one of those moments of prayer that he saw, with startling clarity, what his future could be: an orphanage. A place of love, education, nutrition, and safety for children like him—those rejected and forgotten by the world, yet precious in God’s eyes.

That vision became his life’s calling.Geoffrey’s story doesn’t start with success, it starts with hunger.

That vision became his life’s calling.

A Vision Buried in Mud

In 2006, Geoffrey stepped out in faith. He purchased a small parcel of land in Amakpape, convinced that this barren soil would one day hold a refuge for children. With no funds left, he began construction using what he had—wood, mud, and determination.

Then the rains came with a downpour flattened everything. He rebuilt but the wind tore it apart again. He planted crops to feed the children he dreamed of sheltering, but each year, the river overflowed, flooding his fields and washing away hope.

Alone and out of resources, Geoffrey continued to pray. “Lord,” he said, “I will follow You wherever You lead.” He wrote letters to churches, to local officials, to organizations across the world—pleading not for himself, but for the children waiting for help. Years passed, and every door seemed to close, but God was not silent.

When Hope Found Its Partner

In 2019, after thirteen years of hardship, Geoffrey sent one final letter—to the International Children’s Fund (ICF), headquartered in Neenah, Wisconsin. Dr. David Bruenning, ICF’s founder, read Geoffrey’s letter and was deeply moved. “I knew right away,” Dr. Bruenning recalls, “that Geoffrey’s faith was extraordinary. His perseverance was not human—it was divine.”

ICF began to help with a small gift at first—enough to test the ground. But Geoffrey’s response was immediate. Within months, he built a fishpond to feed children, drilled a borehole well that provided clean water to the orphanage and to more than 30,000 villagers, and began raising goats and sheep to sustain daily meals.

Hope, once fragile, had found firm ground.

Kingdom Care: Faith Turned into Action

What started with one man’s prayer has grown into the Kingdom Care Mission—a thriving outreach that now includes:

An orphanage providing shelter and love for more than 150 children.

A school educating over 250 students, teaching literacy, math, and faith.

A medical clinic offering treatment and preventive care to the entire region.

Agriculture and aquaculture programs that feed thousands each month.

Vocational and micro-enterprise training that empower families to rise above poverty.

The change is staggering. Fields that once flooded with despair now produce vegetables and fish. Children who once roamed the streets now read Scripture aloud in classrooms. Women once burdened by daily water-gathering now walk to a nearby well, filling their containers with clear, safe water.

What God has done through Geoffrey and ICF is nothing short of miraculous. And yet, Geoffrey’s humility remains the same. “I was an orphan,” he says softly. “God became my Father—and now He lets me be a father to many.”

The Power of Partnership

Dr. Bruenning often says that ICF’s strength lies not in its size, but in its partnerships. Across 16 missions in Africa, India, and Pakistan, ICF works with indigenous pastors who understand the struggles of their people—because they have lived them. These pastors are the eyes, hands, and feet of compassion in their communities.

They are not outsiders. They are neighbors who build schools and drill wells. They plant crops, deliver food, teach trade skills, and preach the gospel. And, like Geoffrey, they do it not for recognition, but because love compels them.

Last year alone, ICF missions provided food, medicine, housing, education, and safe drinking water to tens of thousands of families. Over 99.7% of ICF’s total expenses went directly to these programs—proof that faith and integrity still move mountains.

Where Faith and Resilience Meet

The children of Amakpape no longer cry themselves to sleep. Laughter now fills the orphanage courtyard. The borehole water sparkles in the sun. When the rains come, they no longer destroy—they nourish. What was once a flood of loss has become a river of life.

On a recent visit, Geoffrey stood beside the well, surrounded by children singing praises. “Every drop of water is a miracle,” he said. “When I was young, I asked God to use me. Now I see—He didn’t just answer. He overflowed.”

In that moment, the beauty of partnership becomes clear. God takes the smallest acts of obedience—one orphan’s prayer, one donor’s gift—and multiplies them until they overflow into eternity.

A Call to Prayer and Compassion

Today, Geoffrey’s vision continues to expand. The Kingdom Care Mission dreams of building new classrooms, expanding medical care, and reaching even more children across West Africa. But just as before, this work depends on faith—and on those willing to walk alongside.

You don’t need to travel to Togo to be part of this story. You can pray, you can share, and you can give. You can become what ICF calls a “Hope Ambassador”—someone who stands in the gap for children who would otherwise be forgotten.

Every prayer matters and every gift, whether large or small, becomes an answer to someone’s cry. Together, we can keep the river of hope flowing.

For the nearly one million people who call Kibera home, life is survival on the edge.

The Harsh Reality of Daily Life

Water is scarce. Families walk long distances with heavy jerry cans, praying the water they bring back isn’t contaminated. Many depend on vendors who charge high prices for even the smallest containers. The risk of waterborne disease is constant.

Sanitation is an even greater struggle. Public toilets are few, often cost money to use, and are shared by thousands of people. When the lines are too long or the fees unaffordable, many resort to the indignity of “flying toilets”—plastic bags used at night, then tossed into alleys or ditches. Others dig ditches between the houses and use these open sources to relieve themselves. During the rainy season, sewage overflows through the settlement, carrying waste into homes, spreading disease, and worsening the smell that already clings heavy to the air.

In 1978, our founder Dr. David Bruenning arrived in Kibera with the intent of sharing a message of hope. As he preached in an open space a large group of Indigenous people surrounded him which made it difficult for others to see and hear him. So, he looked for the tallest structure he could stand on, which was a garbage pile filled with waste and old tires. As he climbed to the top his eyes immediately began to water and sting from the fumes. By the time he had finished his sermon, his entire throat and nose were burned from the intensity of the smell.

Garbage collection is nonexistent, so piles of trash line the walkways. Food scraps rot in the heat. The children rummage through these with the goats and wild dogs, having nothing else to eat. Plastic bags catch the wind, fluttering like unwanted flags. The odor can turn your stomach, but for a hungry child, any scrap is better than the daily pain of hunger.

Can you imagine being a child growing up like that?

For parents, the heaviest burden is watching their children suffer. They wonder where the next meal will come from, or how to pay school fees. For children, hunger is constant, an ache that never goes away. Many fall ill with diarrhea, typhoid, or malaria, illnesses that could be prevented with clean water and proper sanitation.

The Beginning of Hope

And yet, amid the harshest conditions, there is a flame of hope.

For 44 years, our partner Bishop Peter Sila has walked these very alleys. In 1981, he founded the Open Gate of Hope Mission in Kibera where he feeds and educates as many children as possible everyday. Nearby in Machakos about 40 miles from Kibera, a vision that has grown into orphanages, schools, a church, and—perhaps most transformational of all—an agricultural project that teaches children and families to feed their families in an ongoing and sustainable way.

Remember:

“If you give a man a fish he eats for a day, but teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime.”

The mission of Open Gate provides hope through empowerment and self-sustainability. Where there was only hunger, now there are fields of kale, bananas, cassava, and tomatoes.

Where children drank dirty water, now wells drilled into the dry ground give life, irrigating farms that produce food even in the hottest season. Where protein was rare, cows and chickens now provide milk and eggs daily.

Every day, more than 200 children receive food because of this mission. Not scraps, but nutritious meals that help their bodies grow strong and their minds stay sharp. The same children who might have scavenged from garbage heaps for food now walk to school with full bellies, carrying books instead of empty stomachs.

And it doesn’t stop at food. The mission offers education, clothing, and medical care. It creates opportunity where none existed before. It replaces despair with dignity, and hopelessness with a vision for the future.

The Ripple Effect of Hope

The Open Gate Agricultural Project is more than a farm—it’s a model of sustainability. Crops feed children in the orphanages and schools. Goats, pigs, chickens, and cattle provide milk, meat, and eggs. And the wells ensure wholesome clean water flows even when drought parches the land.

This self-sustaining cycle means that the impact ripples far beyond the mission walls. Families in surrounding villages benefit from affordable food. Children who might otherwise go hungry or drop out of school find nourishment and hope.

Most importantly, children see a different possibility for their future. Rather than believing that poverty is their destiny, they see role models who show them a new way forward. They learn that with God’s help, with education, and with opportunity, they can rise above the suffering.

The Difference You Can Make

For children in Kibera, the difference between despair and hope is tangible. It looks like a plate of rice and beans instead of going to bed hungry.

It sounds like laughter in a classroom rather than silence in the dark. It feels like dignity instead of degradation.

But this difference does not happen by accident. It happens because people like you choose to care. It happens because someone gave, and a child’s life was changed.

In 2024, 99.7% of every dollar given to the International Children’s Fund went directly into programs like these. That means almost nothing is lost to overhead. Every gift is an investment in changing a child’s life and an answer to their prayers.

Will you be a Hope Ambassador?

When you give, you’re not only feeding children today—you’re planting seeds of hope for tomorrow. You are providing wells, farms, and livestock that sustain communities. You are helping children rise out of despair with dignity.

The people of Kibera don’t need pity, they need partners who will show them compassion. They need people willing to stand with them, who will see the worth of every child who calls this place home.

Are you willing to be the one who stands with them? Will you be a Hope Ambassador—a faithful friend who says, “Your life matters. Your future matters. You are not forgotten.”

A Final Word of Promise

In Kibera’s narrow alleys, where the stench of garbage and sewage mixes with the cries of hungry children, hope is a daily miracle. And through your hands, your prayers, and your giving, God is writing a different story.

For more than 50 years, the International Children’s Fund has been committed to creating sustainable improvements in the lives of desperately poor children and families across Africa, India, and Pakistan. One of the most powerful tools we have in this mission is education.

At ICF, we believe education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty. Or as Dr. David Bruenning often tells the children we serve: “The more you learn, the more you earn.” Education equips young people not only with knowledge but with the confidence and skills needed to build better lives for themselves, their families, and their communities.

A Holistic Educational Experience

ICF supports educational initiatives at all our missions. This includes the construction and operation of primary and secondary schools, scholarships, and post-secondary technical and vocational training. These programs ensure that children and young adults can grow with the tools needed to achieve self-sufficiency and hope.

For children in Liberia and beyond, education must be paired with holistic care, support that meets physical, spiritual, and emotional needs alongside academics. That’s why our long-term partner, Great Commission Victory Ministries (GCVM), has become such an extraordinary force for change.

Since 2008, ICF has worked hand-in-hand with GCVM to ensure children not only have access to classrooms, but also to the vital resources that allow them to thrive while they learn. Beyond building a K–12 school—Victory Life Academy—currently educating more than 500 students, GCVM has also developed a network of support systems including a clinic and a church that play a critical role in students’ lives.

Victory University for Women

ICF and GCVM are now undertaking our most ambitious educational project to date: Victory University for Women (VUW). This initiative is designed to close the gender gap in education, training, and employment by creating a safe space for women to pursue higher learning.

The university will offer a comprehensive range of programs, including STEM, Business and Entrepreneurship, Arts and Humanities, Health Sciences, Women’s Studies, Leadership, Global Studies, Media and Communications, and Environmental Studies. These courses will empower women with the knowledge and confidence to excel in their chosen fields and uplift their communities.

The exterior of the building is complete, plumbing and electrical systems are underway, and interior finishes are in progress. With doors and windows in transit, the university is on track to open its doors to students in August 2026.

How You Can Help

Projects like Victory Life Academy and Victory University for Women are only possible through the generosity of donors. By becoming a Hope Ambassador, a monthly supporter, you can help sustain these life-changing programs and ensure that children and young women continue to have access to education, clean water, healthcare, and hope for a brighter tomorrow.

At ICF, more than 99.7% of every dollar donated goes directly to mission services, with less than 0.3% spent on administration. You can be assured your gift is making the greatest possible impact.

Join Us in Changing Lives

Every gift, large or small, is an answer to prayer and an investment in the life of a child. Together, we can create opportunities that break cycles of poverty and open doors to brighter futures.

“God is not unjust; He will not forget your work and the love you have shown Him as you have helped His people and continue to help them.” — Hebrews 6:10

A Global Crisis, A Local Solution

According to the World Health Organization, 2.2 billion people worldwide still lack access to safe drinking water. For 700 million of them, clean water isn’t just inconvenient, it’s virtually inaccessible, often requiring a journey of over 30 minutes to reach a water source that may not even be safe. The consequences are devastating: waterborne illnesses such as cholera, hepatitis A, and typhoid claim thousands of lives every year, especially among children.

ICF is on a mission to change that—by drilling wells in some of the most water-scarce regions of the world. In 2024 alone, ICF successfully drilled 23 new wells, bringing fresh, clean drinking water to over 50,000 villagers. And this work continues into 2025 with the drilling of more wells in India, Pakistan, Liberia, and beyond.

From Crisis to Celebration

In Ghanapur, India, families brought buckets, bottles, and containers of every shape and size to celebrate the opening of a new well. Their joy was contagious, the smiles on their faces said everything. For these families, clean water means fewer illnesses, safer communities, and brighter futures.

In Cape Mount, Liberia, ICF recently drilled a new well near a local school, church, and orphanage to replace one that had gone dry. Pastor Paasewe, a local leader, expressed heartfelt gratitude:
“Thanks to ICF and all its supporters, we will no longer need to go to the creek to bathe and to get water to drink.”

And in Pakistan, ICF has now funded 59 water wells, most of them in rural villages with no previous access to clean water. Each well supports the daily needs of hundreds of families, creating ripple effects that last for generations.

Why It Matters

Clean water changes everything. It prevents disease. It helps children stay healthy enough to attend school. It improves sanitation and hygiene. It boosts the local economy. It transforms entire communities.

Through the generosity of supporters like you, ICF is making all of this possible.

How You Can Help

Regular giving is what powers ICF’s water well programs and so much more. If you’re already a donor, thank you. If you’re looking for a way to make an even deeper impact, consider becoming a Hope Ambassador. Your monthly support helps ICF continue providing health, dignity, and hope to children and families in desperate need.

Hope That Fills Empty Plates – And Hearts

Imagine, just for a moment, going without food for days. Now, imagine watching your own child or grandchild cry from hunger, powerless to help. Sadly, this is the harsh reality for far too many families around the world. In fact, the United Nations estimates that one child under the age of five dies every 10 seconds in sub-Saharan Africa, most from hunger and preventable conditions related to malnutrition.

But because of you and your support to ICF, this story is changing.

In 2024 alone, your support helped ICF deliver over 1.6 million meals to children and their families. These meals include rice, beans, meat products, gari, cornmeal, and powdered milk — sourced both locally and through shipments from the U.S. Even more promising is the growing portion of food now being grown or raised directly within our mission centers, promoting sustainability and long-term nourishment.

We serve children in orphanages and schools, but we don’t stop there. Our dedicated missionaries, like Pastor Peterson in Uganda, travel to remote villages to deliver not just food and medicine — but hope. In every village he visits, Pastor Peterson ensures that children receive a hearty, nutritious meal, often their only one in days. The children wait patiently, eyes bright with anticipation, and leave with full stomachs and renewed spirits.

Food Is Just the Beginning

For over 40 years, ICF has worked to provide food, clean water, housing, and medicine, but we know the only way to break the cycle of poverty is to look beyond immediate needs.

That’s why we are deeply committed to education, skills training, and micro-commerce initiatives. Through programs that offer gardening supplies, livestock, and small business resources, families are gaining the tools they need to become self-sufficient. These efforts are planting the seeds for long-term change — enabling parents to feed their own children and invest in their futures.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for walking alongside us in this mission. Because of you, a child who would have gone hungry today is fed. A family that once had no options now has opportunity. And a community that struggled in despair is now blooming with hope.
