The Worth of Water: How ICF is Changing Lives, One Well at a Time

“When the well’s dry, we know the worth of water.”
– Benjamin Franklin

These timeless words resonate deeply across the rural communities served by the International Children’s Fund. While many of us take clean water for granted, millions around the world do not have access to this life-sustaining resource. That’s why ICF’s clean water initiative has become one of the most impactful and urgent efforts across Africa, India, and Pakistan.

A Global Crisis, A Local Solution

According to the World Health Organization, 2.2 billion people worldwide still lack access to safe drinking water. For 700 million of them, clean water isn’t just inconvenient, it’s virtually inaccessible, often requiring a journey of over 30 minutes to reach a water source that may not even be safe. The consequences are devastating: waterborne illnesses such as cholera, hepatitis A, and typhoid claim thousands of lives every year, especially among children.

ICF is on a mission to change that—by drilling wells in some of the most water-scarce regions of the world. In 2024 alone, ICF successfully drilled 23 new wells, bringing fresh, clean drinking water to over 50,000 villagers. And this work continues into 2025 with the drilling of more wells in India, Pakistan, Liberia, and beyond.

From Crisis to Celebration

In Ghanapur, India, families brought buckets, bottles, and containers of every shape and size to celebrate the opening of a new well. Their joy was contagious, the smiles on their faces said everything. For these families, clean water means fewer illnesses, safer communities, and brighter futures.

In Cape Mount, Liberia, ICF recently drilled a new well near a local school, church, and orphanage to replace one that had gone dry. Pastor Paasewe, a local leader, expressed heartfelt gratitude:
“Thanks to ICF and all its supporters, we will no longer need to go to the creek to bathe and to get water to drink.”

And in Pakistan, ICF has now funded 59 water wells, most of them in rural villages with no previous access to clean water. Each well supports the daily needs of hundreds of families, creating ripple effects that last for generations.

Why It Matters

Clean water changes everything. It prevents disease. It helps children stay healthy enough to attend school. It improves sanitation and hygiene. It boosts the local economy. It transforms entire communities.
