Imagine not having anything to eat … for days at a time. Then try to imagine the horror of not having any food for your children or grandchildren. Regrettably, this is all too common. In fact, the UN estimates that, on average, one child under the age of five dies every 10 seconds in sub-Saharan Africa – most due to starvation.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 2.9 million children under the age of 5 die in sub-Saharan Africa annually. This is equivalent to 5 children under the age of 5 dying every minute. They estimate that two thirds of these deaths can be attributed to preventable causes like pneumonia, diarrhea, and malaria.

In rural Africa, the care that a Mother provides to her children is often at the expense of their own. When there is not enough food, the children eat, and Mothers often go hungry. When there is a shortage of medication, Mothers go without.

The International Children’s Fund (ICF) was created more than 40 years ago with the singular goal of helping desperately poor children. Our objective has always been to help these children survive, by providing them food and shelter, and then prosper, by providing them access to the education and training to help lift them out of poverty.
