Clean Water | July 2024

“Water is life, and clean water means health.” – Audrey Hepburn

According to UNICEF, more than 700 million people live without clean water. Without proper access to clean water, diseases silently overwhelm entire populations and take the lives of millions. In fact, diseases from contaminated water kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war.

In the parts of the world where clean water is never guaranteed, poor health from waterborne contaminants is a constant reality. These contaminants prohibit people from living their lives to the fullest. They can become too ill to get food, to receive an education, and to earn an income.

The girls in these pictures are from the Akuamu Amoafo Presbyterian Primary School in Eastern Ghana. Each day, they must walk more than a mile in 100+ degree heat to collect water from a surface stream. This surface stream is the only source of drinking water for three communities and causes widespread issues with waterborne diseases like diarrhea and cholera.

With your help, we can begin a clean water project near this school in Eastern Ghana. It will change the lives of these girls, all the students, and many in the surrounding villages.

Bringing Hope: Nadunget, Uganda

In Nadunget, Uganda, near the Sudan border, we recently drilled three water wells approximately five kilometers apart. We tapped into clean water, purified by the earth, but we also found something else: hope. In a remote village where food is scarce and safe drinking water is nonexistent, these water wells will change the way of life.

No longer will women and children need to travel long distances for contaminated water.

Now, they will have time for an education.

No longer will widespread starvation rage across the community.

Now, a farming project can be established and supported by the flow of clean water.

“No matter who we are or where we come from, we’re all entitled to the basic human rights of clean air to breathe, clean water to drink, and healthy land to call home.” – Martin Luther King III

At the International Children’s Fund, we believe in working diligently to promote access to this basic human right, and to promote sustainability while doing so. With the boreholes, handpumps, and water wells we install, the communities we serve will have access to clean water for generations to come.

We envision a future where people do not rely on surface water for daily needs. A future where the water sources are not tainted streams, ponds, and puddles shared with livestock.

We envision a future where women and girls do not have to search and carry contaminated water for miles in the hot sun.

We envision a future with clean water and are committed to making it a reality.

A Global Commitment

Across 3 continents and 7 countries, we have built more than 100 water wells, hand pumps, and boreholes to serve the communities that need them most. We remain steadfastly committed to continuing this mission until everyone has access to clean water.

August is “Make A Will Month”

Did you know August is “Make a Will Month”? The International Children’s Fund has partnered with FreeWill so our supporters can use their online platform to create a legal will easily, quickly, and at absolutely no cost. Over one million people have used FreeWill to create their wills and legacies. No matter what you own or how old you are, a will enables you to properly document your estate plans. Although there is no obligation, you can also include gifts to the International Children’s Fund and other non-profits. Legacy giving enables our work to continue for generations to come.

Please know that every gift, no matter how large or small, is an answer to our prayers and an investment in the life of a child. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for your continued prayers and financial support.

Thank you and God Bless,

Dr. David Bruenning

Matthew 25: 35-40: “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me. Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”
